Ignacio -

It is exactly my point that Gregge should not be keeping anything off the
lists at all. It is not his job to be a Name gate-keeper any more than it
is yours or mine. The way we play the game is to let people have fun and
enjoy their hobby. If that means using a name like Astro the Dog, or Conan
of Sumeria, then let them. There are no rules on name usage except when
someone wants to register it. I don't think it is our business as marshals
to discourage anybody on their name choice unless advice is requested by
the individual. I suppose I can see our way clear to saying something if
they want to call themselves Duke Nukem, or Count Chocula, but only because
then people might be thinking they were assuming a title they had not
earned. Fred Nukem would be ok...

Why should Gregge have to wait and check with any marshal about somebody's
name? If they gave the name to the scorekeeper, then it is their name, and
not the business of their local marshal. Lets be open-minded about letting
people play the game the way they want to, and not put our particular
vision of how it should be played on them. We are a big society...

Respectfully,

Nikolai (the Red and Black Baron?)

I do not mean that we should help them with their names or become heralds.
But just TRY to strongly discourage names that are obviously fantasy,
fiction, etc. from being presented on the SCA pages. The same way that
heralds don't like to present them to the College of Heralds.

Read it again. I also told Gregge to keep those type of names off the list
until he can check with the respective marshal. The respective marshal
should have MENTIONED this to the respective archer when they wrote down
their name. It is also an act or courtesy on the part of the marshal to let
the new archer know that there might be problems with the name.

I am not trying to change anything, just play the game as it was taught to
me.

I hope that this clears things up a little.

As both a herald and an archery marshal, I have to agree with Nikolai's
post. As a herald it is my job to assist new people with their names. As
an archery marshal it is my job to make sure newcomers learn to shoot
safely, abide by the rules and have a good time while doing so.
