(this email is being posted to both the yahoo group and the server based elist so that all of the Barony has a chance to see and discuss the topic)

So Lord Luther asked a couple of questions about the server based e-list yesterday. I have added his questions below....

Just a curiousity question, but I thought the new elist was official, that was the reason it was being switched from the yahoo list so it could be.I was told this was a done deal and pretty much over with.
I also thought groups were pretty much being made to switch to kingdom servers yet I see groups in the Midrealm still using yahoo and telling me they have no clue about a switch being imposed. is this just a Kingdom thing?
Luther

So does this mean that the new improved list that wasn`t supposed to change anything, actually does change things and doesn`t offer what yahoo does?
Luther

The first question asked was about an agenda item for the upcoming meeting. The item is a discussion and possibly vote on making the server based e-list an official form of communication for the group. So in answer to that question I have this.

In the email about the server based list that I sent on January 23rd I stated "In addition we can eventually choose to add the e-list to our forms of official communication, if we choose."

When the vote was taken to move the e-list to the kingdom server we did not vote to make it an official form of communication. Right now the server based e-list is not official nor is the yahoo group. That is something that needed a separate vote. One of the reasons is that on an official list all communications are actually official. This is very new territory for us as a group. This could mean that eventually all activities (i.e. fighter practices, art nights, etc...) would be consider official and be treated as such. This also means that I person could post their "vote" on a matter to the list and that could act as their proxy for a vote they could not attend. Also it gives the opportunity for actions to be taken quicker in case of a needed change to a polling or other activity. Right now our only "official" form of communication is the Baronial Newsletter.

Next, Lord Luther inquired about whether other kingdoms were switching to using their servers for communications....

On January 23rd I wrote "The webminister's office has expressed a desire to eventually have groups house their e-lists on the SCA servers just as they have with the websites.
I think I should have added the word Atlantia to that. :) I don't know what other kingdoms are doing. The kingdom Webminister's office and Seneschal's office have expressed the desire to have all SCA related activities online such as e-lists and websites hosted on the atlantia.sca.org server. I do want to restate again that this is NOT something that is being imposed on us. It is something that has been suggested to help centralize communications, and to give us more support if it is needed.

The day to day workings of the elist are not changed on the server based list. You post a message from your email, it goes to the list, the list sends it to those on the list getting emails, and archives it for future reference.
