A few of the things I would like to contribute to today's conversation:<br>
<br>
1) Next Northern War Practices:<br>
May 6, at Storvik, with combat archery<br>

being worked out<br>
<br>
1.5) At university I will be teaching a basic tactics class for any who
wish to brush up.<br>
<br>
2) We shouldn't just wait for these war practices to do melee. Do them
at practices, challenge other baronies (perhaps to attend Ponte-Alto's
Sunday practice?). Many newbies need to practice to just develop "melee
sense" and figure out what to do. Pair them with somebody experienced
(been to a few Pennsics) to figure things out.<br>

3) Understand that when a "charge" is called-- everybody goes forward
together (not in drips) toward the enemy in a line. At Pennsic whenever
we expect a charge (field battle) I try to arrange that the front line
is two shields deep for extra impact and support.<br>
<br>
4) Flanking is good whenever we don't charge. Units need to rehearse
tactics to go around the left and right flanks. Understand the
difference between "guide right", "right wheel" and their left
counterparts.<br>
<br>
5) Understand a "killing cup" and how to set one up for the bridge.
Understand that the spears need room to work and how to feed in shields
and spears.<br>
<br>
6) yes- there are many more tactics to discuss- but the above three are
a good place to start.<br>
<br>
7) Although its early in the season a rough guide of numbers and
weapons mix would be useful.<br>

The current weather for today is rain. Lots of it, and 48 degrees too.<br>
The alternative is to at least have a gathering today to discuss the
Northern Army, where we are with training, equipment and what war
practices, assessments and campaigns are coming up, that we should be
prepared for.<br>
