Greetings to all within the Barony,

Please permit me to humbly introduce myself as a new Deputy Minister of
Arts and Sciences serving the crafty and creative (and those who would be
so) among us. Yet the exhibits described in this message I believe to be
of interest to all, inasmuch as they require no great effort or talent to
attend.

A happy Thanksgiving to you,

Giovanna la Nuova

324 Emperor Constantine the Great moved the capital of the Roman Empire
from Rome some thousand miles to the east, near the site of the ancient
Greek city of Byzantium on the Bosphorus Strait linking the Aegean and
Black Seas. Renamed Constantinople (now Istanbul), the city became the
largest and wealthiest in the Christian world. It remained the dominant
power, especially in the eastern Mediterranean, for more than 1,000 years
until it fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1453. In the first-ever exhibition of
Byzantine art at the Gallery, masterpieces from Greek collections (both
public and private), many never before lent to the United States, will be
on view - among them mosaics, icons, manuscripts, jewelry, and ceramics.
Some 170 important works, including newly discovered and unpublished
objects, reveal the rich and multifaceted culture of Byzantium. Divided
into five thematic sections, the exhibition explores the coexistence of
paganism and Christianity, secular works of art used in the home, the
intellectual life of Byzantine scholars, and the art of the Palaiologan
dynasty before the fall of Byzantium.

Cole Kainen was one of the most important collectors of prints and drawings
in recent decades, and bequeathed major works to the National Gallery of
Art. This exhibition—the first of three to focus on central aspects of her
bequest—presents some 50 works that embody the sophisticated imagery,
extraordinary stylization, and virtuoso technique of the printmaking
industry that flourished in the northern Netherlands and at the imperial
court of Prague in the late 16th century. Featured are choice impressions
by the creator of the style, Hendrick Goltzius, as well as his outstanding
early drawing *Ignis*. Also included are exquisite interpretations by the
finest engravers of the powerful works of Goltzius and the leading
Netherlandish painters Cornelis van Haarlem, Abraham Bloemaert, and
Bartholomaeus Spranger. Earlier gifts by Ruth and Jacob Kainen are also on
view.

the sixteenth century, Ovid's *Metamorphoses* had become the most important
single source for mythological lore from the ancient world. It was read in
many different languages, from the original Latin to vernacular
translations in German, Italian, French, English, and Dutch, to name but a
few. In addition, it was edited, adapted, reworked, and rewritten in
various styles according to the changing tastes and needs of the time. From
scholarly versions with dense Latin text and scholarly commentaries and
notes to picture books with abbreviated text in rhymes and large
illustrations, from tiny pocket-sized books to lavishly bound multi-volume
tomes, there was an edition of the *Metamorphoses* to suit everyone.

Through selections from the Library's rare book collection, supplemented
with prints, drawings, medals, and decorative arts objects, this exhibition
illustrates the history and enduring popularity of Ovid's
*Metamorphoses*with readers, scholars, artists, and poets into the
twentieth century.
Addressing the question of how the text was used, delineating the kinds of
books that were produced and their intended audiences, and exploring the
various types of images that accompanied the text in this diverse range of
editions, the exhibition explores some of the ways the text itself, and
images derived from it, were transformed and consumed over time.

Dutch Cabinet Galleries, which opened in 1995, provide a suite of
intimately sized rooms for exhibiting the small-scale Dutch and Flemish
paintings in the collections of the National Gallery of Art. The Cabinet
Galleries consist of three rooms that gracefully flow into each other
through a series of open doorways. Aside from the display of small-scale
paintings, the Dutch Cabinet Galleries provide an ideal space for focus
exhibitions that place Dutch and Flemish works in their historical context.

Armand Hammer collection of old master and modern drawings consists of more
than 50 works by some of the great draftsmen of all time, from Leonardo and
Raphael to Van Gogh and Picasso. With works spanning more than five
centuries—from about 1470 to 1940—the collection features a remarkable
range of studies and finished compositions drawn in a variety of styles and
techniques.

Since their arrival at the National Gallery of Art in 1986, the drawings
have been shown in a nearly continuous series of small exhibitions on a
variety of themes. To avoid overexposure to light, which can damage the
paper and the media, the selection of drawings is changed every six months.
