Some of the calligraphy books claim that, in period, 40 was sometimes 
XXXX. On the other hand, 30 was sometimes XXL.

Supposedly, that's why the 4 on the clock is IIII

Let's just say that English spelling wasn't the only thing done creatively!

For the record, I would read ML as 1050.
