It adds minimal weight; I haven't ever noticed a big difference.
Besides, weight in shields is your friend. The gesso doesn't crack
when struck; it's more flexible than you'd think. (That, and it
doesn't flex much mounted to a shield.) I like to finish the surface
of my shields with fiberglass cloth and epoxy, but depending on my
supplies at hand at any given time, I haven't done this to every one
of my shields.
