I would recommed Jo-Anns for the canvas it's cheaper.
I also do not gesso my sheilds, that adds a lot more weight. I do spray seal them when I am done painting and they hold up quite well.

Greetings Dimien (i think),

We talked last evening at Ponte Alto's Heavy Weapons practice about covering a shield. This is the way I do it. I go to home depot spend 15$ on a painters canvas drop cloth another 3$ on contact glue and about the same on shalack. Cut down the canvas until about three inches hang over the side of the sheild all the way aorund. Then using the contact glue, spray the surface of my canvas and the surface of my shield, wait 15 minutes for the glue on both to get tacky, and then carefully lay the canvas (sticky side down) on the shield (sticky side up) and smooth out the wrinkes until there are none using a metal edge such as a triangle or a ruler or your hand. Then Gesso the surface of your canvas and wait 2 hours before applying a second coat. Then wait a day for the gesso to dry before applying your design paints. Wait another day for the design paints to dry before applying the shalack. As for the edging of the shield. You either apply it on top of the canvas to keep the
canvas in place or under it. My preference is to apply it under the canvas, but you should experiment.

The helm padding is an artlce I found on line called How to Make a Horse Hair Helm Padding (http://www.westkingdom.org/equestrian/Horse_Hair_Helmet_Pad_handout.pdf). Step 2. on is all you need to know about making the helm pattern except if the helm is unusally big. then you need to make the pattern of both the helm and your head and stuff from there. Good luck. I'll see you Sunday with material, instructioins and equipment.
