A Day at the Races - Raingutter Regatta Instructions

A Day at the Races II: Race to the New World
Barony of Ponte Alto
November 12, 2005
Falls Church Presbyterian Church, Falls Church, VA

The ship races at Day at the Races II are designed
after the specifications by the Boy Scouts' raingutter
regattas. You may pick up a kit from any store that
sells Scout supplies, or you may make your own.

In this kind of race, two raingutters are placed on a
pair of sawhorses, and filled with water. That will be
our "ocean" for the races. After that, one ship will
be placed in each raingutter and will be set out to
sail. How do you make your ship move? By blowing
through a straw on its sail of course!

We would like to add that you can pick up kits
anywhere where they sell supplies for Boy Scouts.
Contact Her Excellency Baronne Belphoebe (baroness AT
pontealto.atlantia.sca.org) if you have any questions.

Here are the specifications for the ships:

Hull: No longer than 7" or shorter than 6 1/2"
Mast: 6 1/2" from deck to top
Keel: Optional or supplied in kit if you have
purchased one
Rudder: Optional or supplied in kit if you have
purchased one
Sail: Optional or supplied in kit if you have
purchased one

Remember, your ship must fit in the raingutter. It
must also be light enough and balanced enough that it
won't sink or tip over.

We will have some "rental" ships on site, courtesy of
Lady Delphina the Mad's Quality Used Ship Emporium.
She accepts chocolate, assorted gifts and compliments
as payment. Heck, you might even convince her to let
you use one of her ships if you tell her a good sob
story!

So bring your ships and come race with us! There will
be a prize for the winner of the races and another for
the most original ship.

So what are you waiting for? Come join us! We are
waiting for you!

You can build your own or you can purchase a kit
wherever they sell Scout supplies. (Casual Adventure
in Arlington has them, BTW).
