I'll have to agree on the getting it fixed side.  Also, a 
general cleaning (about $50) every other year isn't a bad 
idea either.  Prevents things like having the timing go 
really wonky on your friend that borrowed the machine and 
spending $120 fixing it (my fault for not having it 
cleaned in 5 years- but it has now terrified her of using 
sergers...) All names have been removed for the protection 
of the innocent.

Think of it as an oil change for your sewing machine - if 
you do it, it will purr along happily.  If you don't do 
it, you will purr along happily until it gums up and then 
it stops.
