<HTML><BODY STYLE="font:10pt verdana; border:none;"><DIV>Since we are dealing with late period people that stab people, have a tourney to deside the "Don" of Atlantia. This title would be given to the leader of the shadowy world of "Fencing." As the King is the father of the Kingdom, the Don would be the Godfather. He would establish Families in each Barony lead by his Capos.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>During times of war the Families would "Take to the Matress" as rival families fight it out. If a Lord needed something from the Fencers, he could see the Don and "ask for a favor." Bada boom, bada bing, the Don takes care of it with a few of "da boys".</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>The Don could also be helpful in negotiation of treatise with other Kingdoms. Just send a few of "da boys" out to make the King of the Middle a offer he can't refuse. Other wise he wakes up with a Seahorse head in his bed. Ahhh, ferget about it.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Of course the Fencer would have to make all of their garb out of sharkskin leather and pinstripes. They would all have to learn Sicilian stye fencing and "wack" the opposition.</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV>Joking aside, I think this would be more in period then Blackbeard stye Pirates. Patronage and the Mafia have been around a lot longer then the Spanish Main. Also I believe that Italy had a huge effect on Fencing. Ehhh, whadayagonadoabotit! (Shrug with palms up.)</DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <BLOCKQUOTE style="BORDER-LEFT: #000000 2px solid; MARGIN-LEFT: 5px; MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px; PADDING-LEFT: 5px; PADDING-RIGHT: 0px"> <DIV style="FONT: 10pt Arial">----- Original Message -----</DIV> <DIV style="BACKGROUND: #e4e4e4; COLOR: black; FONT: 10pt Arial"><B>From:</B> Malone, Nicholas S.</DIV> <DIV style="FONT: 10pt Arial"><B>Sent:</B> Wednesday, February 13, 2002 11:10 AM</DIV> <DIV style="FONT: 10pt Arial"><B>To:</B> Merry Rose</DIV> <DIV style="FONT: 10pt Arial"><B>Subject:</B> [MR] Another possibility (was) A Rapier King?</DIV> <DIV> </DIV><!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 3.2//EN"> <META content="MS Exchange Server version 5.5.2653.12" name=Generator> <P><FONT size=2>Greetings unto all;</FONT> <BR> <FONT size=2>Ok, So the king is and will likely for the near future be a Heavy fighter. There is nothing wrong with that at all. I will not get into the period argument or which one is more chivalrous etc. There are good and bad in both. And the way we play they are both sports based on medieval combat. Actual medieval combat, light, heavy, unarmed etc., is much too dangerous given the amount of training that we require to compete and would limit the field to even fewer members. In any case they same sort of people that tend to dominate the field are also the same ones who would likely put in the time and effort to be good at any of the fighting forms and would still place high in the lists.</FONT></P> <P> <FONT size=2>Always one to support a good line of Shtick, why not hold a "clandestine" Tourney to select a "Rapier King" who serves as the "Rebel" King. A pretender, or cadet line "Prince" with their own courts and awards. Who knows, if the rebels ever got popular enough the Atlantian King might even recognize "some" of the rebel edicts and awards as a gesture of peace and appeasement. Of course the Rebel king could be hunted down and beheaded or exiled and or forced to renounce once every OH six months or so. And if I know rebels and such another claimant would soon rise. the potential for alternate personna, spies, intrigue, gossip, etc.. Is just completely beyond my poor imagination. Maybe having a rebel king tourney once a year after Pennsic Wars would enhance the winter activity for wars some and then the winter king would have to stamp out the rebellion before the next summer so that the Kingdom could be United for Pennsic. There has been some tradition of the rapier community being supported by the queen, This would not really have to change, since: 1) not all rapier fighters would naturally support the same royals, and 2) maybe the Queen is the one supporting the rebels, especially if they represented her families interests. Historical precedence for any of these scenarios is not hard to find.
