Yours is a good question and I hope to give you a good answer.  To start, let's review the legalities, then we can discuss the application.

<BR>The requirements for entry and participation in Crown Tournament as listed in Kingdom Law are:

6.2.5: Concerning Crown Tournament.

6.2.5.1: Eligibility for Crown Tournament.

6.2.5.1.1: Each lord competing shall have a prospective consort (lady for whom he is fighting), and each lady competing shall have a prospective consort (lord for whom she is fighting).

6.2.5.1.2: Each competitor and each prospective consort shall be a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. One must be a subscribing member and the other must receive the Kingdom newsletter at his/her address. Each competitor and each prospective consort must be a member of the SCA, Inc. on the first day of the month in which the Crown Tournament occurs, as evidenced by the Registry rolls held by the Kingdom Seneschal which shall be used to determine eligibility for Crown Tournament.

6.2.5.1.3: No one shall compete in the Crown Lists or be the prospective consort of a competitor in the Crown Lists who cannot fulfill the duties of the Crown.

6.2.5.1.4: The victor of the Crown Lists and his or her consort shall together assume the titles of Crown Prince and Crown Princess as appropriate for their gender, and the position of successors to the crown.

6.2.5.1.5: All fighting and non-fighting entrants in the Crown Tournament must be presented to and acceptable to the Crown.

6.2.5.1.5.1: The Crown may only deny participation in Crown Tourney for just and stated cause. If either participant is found unacceptable, the participant may require that the Crown publicly state, before the tourney commences, the reason that the participant was found unacceptable. Failure of the Crown to comply with this type of request will result in the declaration of the Crown List as null and void, and will necessitate a new Crown List be held as soon as possible.

6.2.5.1.6: The withdrawal of either the prospective sovereign or the prospective consort automatically eliminates both from that Crown Tournament. Either may withdraw at any point in the tournament, without loss of honor, by notifying the Crown and the Minister of the Crown Lists.

6.2.5.1.7: All participants in a Crown Tournament must be subjects of the Kingdom of Atlantia who have resided in Atlantia for at least one year immediately prior to the Crown Tourney.

6.2.5.1.8: No person shall enter the Crown Lists without intending an honorable attempt to compete for the Crown.

6.2.5.1.9: Any of all of the requirements for entrance to the Crown Tournament stated above, with the exception of those required by Corpora, may be waived by the Crown.

6.2.5.2: The Crown Tournament shall be a double elimination tournament.

<BR>IV. ROYALTY

<BR>A. Selection

1. Royal Lists must be conducted at a tournament announced in the kingdom newsletter as being for that purpose.

2. Each competitor and prospective consort must hold a valid membership on the day of the Royal Lists, and must maintain that membership until their term of Royalty is over. Positive confirmation that the Registry has processed the membership application is required before anyone may fight or be fought for in a Royal List. Positive confirmation consists of a valid membership card, appearance of the name with a valid membership on a printout from the Corporate Office, a membership label issued by the Corporate Office showing the name and expiration date, or a postcard or letter from the Corporate Office confirming that the membership has been received.

3. Kingdoms and principalities will ensure that all competitors in a Crown and Coronet Lists are aware of and meet the membership requirements for themselves and their prospective consorts at the time they register for the Lists. Any officer of the Society or representative of a Kingdom found responsible for allowing a non-member to participate, as an entrant or prospective consort, in a Royal List will be subject to sanctions.

<BR>B. Qualifications

1. Each competitor in a Royal List must be fighting for a prospective consort of the opposite gender.

2. No one may take part in a Royal Lists, either as a competitor or as a prospective consort, who has any reason to believe that either member of that competing couple will be unable to fulfill the duties of royalty.

3. Each competitor and prospective consort must have access to the appropriate corporate newsletter at their place of residence.

Now for how this happens.

<BR>

<BR>One of the first acts of Their Majesties is to select the exact format of the Crown Tournament and place the call for contenders. As Coronation was held in September, the announcement appears in the October Acorn (our Kingdom Newsletter). For the next part, I will quote from Their Majesties' letter in the Acorn:

"As your King and Queen, We deem it Our duty to ensure a rightful succession when We in turn are laid to rest. To that end, We will host a Crown Tournament in Our gracious Shire of Seareach on the 3rd day of November. Should you wish to vie for the thrones of this sweetest of Kingdoms, you must provide us with a Letter of Intent no later than the 22nd day of October. Please be advised that this is a firm deadline, and that no combatant will be accepted to the list unless We receive a letter from him or her by the specified date. Please also submit a copy of your letter to the Kingdom Seneschal, Master Corwyn Sinister, so that We may be assured all contenders and consorts meet the qualifications for Monarchy as identified in Kingdom Law. (email is acceptable - request receipt).

<BR>"A Letter of Intent must contain the following information for both fighter and consort, if We are to accept it: SCA Name, Modern Name, Membership Number and Expiration Date, Modern Mailing Address (per the Acorn), Telephone Number, Email Address (if available)

<BR>"In addition, We will require that all combatants swear fealty to Us prior to entering the Crown list."

This is the reason why there is no "Official" list of Crown Tournament contenders available yet, the list won't be finalized until twelve days before the Tournament.

On the day of the Crown Tournament, the heralds place the contenders in reverse precedence order (from the lowest, who have no Award of Arms, to highest, the Peers - in order of creation) and announce them to the Crown. The contenders present themselves to the Crown and confirm their intention to participate in the tournament. The contenders are usually separated, non-Peerage from Peerage, then the non-Peers choose their opponents for the first round of the tournament. The tournament is fought until there is a victor and consort who are crowned Prince and Princess of Atlantia.
