give a play with religious content as entertainment at
a feast, then you are opening yourself up to a bunch
of flak, whether it is OK under corpora or not. And
to me, giving it at feast is a gray area because folk
who were uncomfortable would have to choose between
enjoying food and companionship and escaping what they
perceived as religious oppression. Same issue with
efore/after/during court.
So what about the opposite, where religion is being made light of? I
attended a feast a few years back where each remove was "in honor" of a
saint. However, it was done very distastefully. St. Lawrence, for instance,
who was matryred on a spit over an open flame, was represented with barbeque.
Each remove was like this, with others being more distatseful. St. Agatha's
remove was chicken breasts--and if you don't know why this is distastefull,
Anyway, I am not a muslim, but if someone at feast were to perform some kind
of muslim entertainment with islamic overtones, I would not be offended. I
am not Jewish, but if someone wanted to peroform a Jewish song with religious
overtones at feast, I would not be bothered. But this particular
"non-religious" feast was very bothersome. I would rather see period
religions portrayed in realistic and faithful manners at events any day over
having them made fun of or used as a the butt of a bad joke. Maybe it can't
get the SCA, Inc, into as much legal trouble should someone decide to get
perschnicketty and cause a ruckus. But it is very much more offensive to a
greater number of people, in my opinion.
