Noble Friends,
Today the History Blog reports on an extremely rare bookmark which was just
sold at auction.
The piece is a parchment strip with a small parchment disk attached. The
disk is made of two pieces in a sort of hinge arrangement which can expose
the numbers 1 to 4. The bookmark would allow a copyist to indicate the
paragraph upon which he ended his work in preparation for the next day's
transcribing.
Bookmarks of this type are extremely rare, with only about 36 known.
The story and photos are at https://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/76314 .
This would make a wonderful A&S project for some Scadian artisan, perhaps a
bibliophile or a retired librarian such as myself. Hmmmm. Just what I need,
another project!
Yours Aye,
