Noble Friends,
Lady Sarah Sinclair called this fascinating YouTube video to my attention
this morning: "Rockamadour, France's Medieval Sanctuary Clinging to the
Cliff" [from the "Amazing Places on Our Planet" video series].
The 7-minute film explores this lovely medieval town, castle and famous
shrines from just about every angle possible, including looking down from
several towers which made me queasy (I don't like heights; mabe something
to do with being pitched out of a helicopter over Long Beach harbor in my
military days but I digress). The film is beautifully shot and edited.
There is no narration, but instead you will enjoy a nice instrumental
background featuring periodish stringed instruments.
My one criticism is that on several views of shrines, the scene shifts
before you can read the signage. If that bothers you, back up and freeze
the film.
Rockamadour lies in the mountainous Occitanie region of southwest France.
The location has prehistoric and dark ages roots. Most of the town was
built up during the 12th century, though parts of it were ravaged several
times by war. It was once a major pilgrimage site, and is famous for its
Black Madonna Statue as well as an impressive collection of tombs and
shrines. Today, it is best known for its olde buildings, local cheese and
stomach-churning views.
IMHO, Rocamadour would make a great place to stage a major SCA tournament.

A general search on "Rockamadour" will yield up enough other videos to keep
you entertained for a whole morning.
