Noble Friends,
This day in 1410 marks the first mention of the Prague Astronomical Clock,
aka the Prague Orloj. The famous clock is mounted on Prague's Town Hall,
and is one of the city's most beloved attractions.
This medieval marvel has morphed over several centuries, beginning with a
24-hour clock dial and the astronomical dial showing the position of the
sun and the moon (some modern grandfather clocks still include this
feature). Over the years other features were added, including the calendar
dial in 1490. The delightful parade of apostle figures who appear on the
hour were added in the 18th century.
You can see the clock in action at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xk9lwsenZOo . Take note of Death who is
striking the hours, as a figure on the left shakes its head and waggles a
cane.
