Noble Friends,

Last week Archaeology News reported on the discovery of four medieval
spears from Lake Lednicia in western Poland.

The spears, one of which had most of its shaft intact, are dated to the
late 10th or early 11th centuries. They are thought to be from the Piast
state of Mieszko I or Bolesław I the Brave.

One of the spears shows evidence of pattern welding. Another, probably made
for a high noble, still has traces of silver plating and gilding.
