Noble Friends,

It seems to have been the season of the swords in European archaeology.
Roman cavalry swords were discovered in Gloucester, England, and an 11th
century Frankish sword was found in the Netherlands. Now a medieval sword
was found in Warsaw, Poland.

The latest find came from Warsaw's Vistula River, and was a chance find by
a fisherman. He noticed an odd piece of metal that he first mistook for a
piece of rebar. It turned out to be nearly intact medieval blade and hilt.
Upon advice of a friend, the fisherman wrapped the sword in wet shirts to
keep it from deteriorating, and delivered it to the authorities the next
day.

The weapon's hilt still bears a cross patée, a symbol used by the Knights
Templar, but also some other orders as well as some sword makers. Experts
are not yet saying if there is a Templar connection.

The sword is now at Poland's State Archaeological Museum where it will be
stabilized and studied.
