Noble Friends,
Yesterday the BBC and the History Blog both reported on a small hoard found
at a rescue excavation in Sussex, England.
The hoard was small, just 321 silver pennies or half-pennies, having the
value of 16 cows, and was wrapped in a thin sheet of lead. The cache
probably represents the life savings of a middle-class farmer or craftsman.
The coins mostly date from the reigns of Dane kings Harold Harefoot and
Harthacnute. A small number are from Anglo-Saxon king Edward the
Confessor's reign, with the most recent dated to 1044.
Researchers suggest the coins might have been hidden during Edward's
persecutions against Danes or their supporters between 1042 and 1044. Other
coin hoards dating from this period have been found.
The History Blog story is more detailed than the BBC offering, so I suggest
