Noble Friends,

Today the History Blog reports that the Santini Codex, a remarkable
manuscript filled with detailed drawings of medieval machines, has been
purchased at auction by a public museum.

The Codex is believed to date from the late 15th century. It was once owned
by the Duke of Urbino, Federico da Montefeltro (1422-1482). The
manuscript was purchased at auction by the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche,
and will be returned to the Ducal Palace for display.

The 136 vellum pages are illustrated with various machines as complex as
siege engines, but also as simple as pliers.

The History Blog story is at https://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/72503 .

I was unable to find an online version of the complete Codex (it was
apparently digitized for a 2002 exhibition), but a marvelous sample of its
pages can be viewed at
https://www.ponteonline.com/files/aste/649/0100_en.pdf .

Yours Aye,
