Noble Friends, especially fellow Scots,
Today the BBC had a short piece concerning the Fairy Flag of Dunvegan, an
heirloom of Clan MacLeod kept by their chiefs at Dunvegan Castle on the
Isle of Skye.
This ancient relic is said to have been a gift of the fairies, or was taken
from an evil fey defeated by a MacLeod knight. Various legends (and there
are many, many legends surrounding the flag) claim the flag holds
miraculous powers of healing or victory in battle, but could only be called
upon three times.
There is no doubt that the Fairy Flag, or what is left of it, is of great
antiquity. It is now in such a perilous state that it is too fragile to
ever be scientifically examined. The tattered banner is displayed in a case
at Dunvegan Castle.
The BBC story is found at https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c9qj5x92g1lo .
Wikipedia has an extensive page exploring the many legends about the Fairy
Flag at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairy_Flag . Links there are provided
to two other ancient MacLeod treasures, Sir Rory Mor's horn (a drinking
horn), and the Cup of Dunvegan, a rectangular wooden cup of a type known as
a *mazer*.
And for good measure, here is the link to a Wikipedia page on Dunvegan
Castle, seat of the MacLeod chiefs:
