Noble Friends, especially Fellow Scots:

On this date in 1503, King of Scots James IV married Margaret Tudor at a
ceremony in Holyrood Palace, Edinburgh.

Margaret (1489-1431) was the eldest daughter of England's King Henry VII,
and her marriage to James brought Scotland a period of relative peace with
England. James IV and Henry VII largely avoided open hostilities (though
James did give sanctuary to Perkin Warbeck, pretender to the English
throne). Henry VIII was more aggressive against Scotland and meddled in
Scottish politics, but still avoided most open conflict out of respect for
Margaret while she was alive. In 1513 it was James who invaded England to
support France under the terms of the "Auld Alliance", and was killed at
the Battle of Flodden.

After James' death, Margaret married Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus,
by whom she had a daughter, Margaret Douglas. Margaret was the mother of
Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, the second husband (and cousin) of Mary Queen
of Scots. Thus Margaret was the great grandmother in two directions to King
of Scots James IV (aka James I of England). Confused? Though the Stuart and
Tudor genes are considerably watered down through the Hannovarian
connection, the current King, Charles III, is Margaret Tudor's double
direct descendant.
