Noble Friends, especially Fellow Scots,

Today the History Blog reports on the discovery of an iron chariot wheel
during salvage archaeology at a future golf course near Inverness (to which
I add, "In Scotland, a golf course *of course*!" [Ewww!]

But back to our story. Archaeologists identified a number of possible sites
for excavation in the construction area, which is adjacent to an 1800 BCE
iron age village site called Newton Petty, a protected scheduled monument.

Of chief interest was a cremation pit that was once enclosed by a wooden
palisade. The wheel was found at the center of this structure.

Scottish chariot wheels this old are extremely rare, with only four other
examples having been recovered. This is the only such wheel found in the
Highlands.

The story is found at https://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/73015 .

The original BBC report, with more illustrations, is at

A complete chariot was found in a burial mound near Edinburgh in 2001:
