Noble Friends,

Today the History Blog reports on the exciting news that the largest-value
British coin hoard to date has been saved for a museum.

The hoard was discovered in 2019 by metal detectorists in the Chew Valley
in northern Somerset, England. The area was in rebellion against William
the Conqueror in 1068, and the coins may have been buried for safety. The
latest date on the coins is 1068.

The haul consists of 2,548 silver pennies, 1,343 minted during the reign of
William I, 1,240 from the brief reign of Harold II, a single coin from
Edward the Confessor, and three counterfeits. The complete hoard was valued
at £4.3. Funds to purchase the collection were donated by two charities,
allowing the coins to be acquired by a trust. They will eventually be
displayed at the Museum of Somerset in Taunton.
