Noble Friends,

Yesterday the History Blog reported on a silver communion set found during
an excavation in Tomajmonostora, Hungary.

The dig is on the site of a former Benedictine abbey and was uncovered in
an associated cemetery. The chalice and plate, called a *paten*, are
thought to date from the 13th or 14th century. Both are relatively intact,
with only some deterioration along the edges.

Finding grave goods from the Christian era is something of a rarity. The
Church discouraged the practice as pagan. However, burials of high
churchmen occasionally included items used in their earthly religious life.
Bishops' croziers, their staves of office, were sometimes buried with their
owners.

The illustrated story can be viewed at

Yours Aye,
