Today the History Blog reports on several gaming pieces found during an
excavation at a previously unknown castle near Burgstein, Germany.

The pieces are a die, a chess knight, and several flower-shaped game tokens
carved from antler. The pieces are believed to be from the 11th or 12th
century. The knight is thought to be among the earliest chess pieces found
in Europe.
