Noble Friends,

Today the History Blog reports on the discovery of a 10th century
sabretasche plate, a part of a pouch favored by some Hungarian warriors.

The piece in question is a silver plate, riveted to a backing of bronze. It
would have formed the outer covering to a leather pouch for carrying
fire-making tools and other oddiments. These were popular among warriors,
and were often elaborately decorated (this one isn't), depending upon the
warrior's status. The piece was found in a grave near the village of Cosmad
near Budapest.

The term History Blog uses for this relic is probably what the museum
researchers tagged it with. However, "sabretasche" is from modern German
and refers to a similar pouch carried by hussars and other 18th century
cavalrymen. According to Wikipedia, the item should possibly be called a
"tarsoly", 9th-10th century pouch carried by Magyar warriors. In any case
the find is fascinating.
