[MR] History Blog: Ecclesiastical Seal Matrix from Norwich

Today the History Blog story covered an unusual seal matrix that was found
by . . . who else? . . . metal detectorist, of course.

The 13th or early 14th century matrix features the popular motif of the
Virgin Mary holding the Christ child. A Latin inscription, translated as “I
beseech thee, holy sun of righteousness, be the way,” has never been seen
on any seals or other objects. Also unusual, the back appears to have had a
now lost handle, this one removable .
