Noble Friends, especially Vikings,

Today's History Blog reported on additional finds from the backyard Viking
grave in Setesdal, Norway. More artifacts have been found, including a
shield, knives and an axe head, indicating that this was indeed the burial
place of a Viking warrior.

But wait! Many more beads, a possible cooking pan, spindle whorls and domed
oval brooches suggest this grave may have also held the remains of a woman.
It is quite possible two people were buried here, but so far no human
remains have been found.

The update is at https://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/67754 .

Ah! But what the archaeologists haven't suggested yet is this could be the
grave of a FEMALE VIKING WARRIOR. While not common, some female warrior
graves have been discovered. A famous warrior burial in Birka, Sweden, was
later proven to have been a woman:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birka_female_Viking_warrior . This was
explored in a PBS episode of SECRETS OF THE DEAD (no longer available to
stream, but the preview is here:
https://www.pbs.org/video/viking-warrior-queen-preview-el8xg2/ ).

Let's hear it for the ladies! You go girls!

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
