Noble Friends, especially fellow Scots,

On this date in 1057, King of Scots Macbethad mac Findláech (aka Macbeth)
was defeated in battle by Máel Coluim mac Donnchada (aka Malcolm, Son of
Duncan).

The fight is referred to as the Battle of Lumphanan, that took place in
what is now Aberdeenshire in northwest Scotland. Whether Macbeth was killed
outright, or was mortally wounded and died sometime later is open to
debate.

Contrary to Shakespeare (who wisely toadied up to James I of England by
casting Macbeth as a Highland monster), Macbeth did not murder King Duncan
I of Scotland. In 1040 he defeated Duncan in battle at Bothnagowan, and
usurped the crown to which he had a serious claim of his own. Macbeth ruled
Scotland successfully for 17 prosperous and reasonably stable years (for
Scotland, at least) until Duncan's son Malcolm offed him at Lumphanan.
Macbeth was succeeded by his stepson Lulach, who was also put on ice by
Malcolm a year later.

Malcolm went on to a long and successful reign as King of Scots Malcolm III.

The battle is briefly described at

More on the real Macbeth is found at

Malcolm's life is summarized at
