Noble Friends,

Today's History Blog features an Abbot's wax seal stamp from the Hampshire
Priory of Mottisfont. The seals were used to authenticate indulgence
certificates granted to penitents and pilgrims. Indulgences granted
believers relief from time to be spent in Purgatory after death.

The seal was found by a metal detectorist at Lockerly, a former market site
near the priory. It was probably lost by a prior or one of his chief monks.
It has now gone on display at Mottisfont Abbey, a preserved mansion which
succeeded the priory after the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII.

The story and photos are at https://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/67936 .

The BBC also offers a story about the stamp at
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-hampshire-66328253 .

Yours Aye,
