Noble friends,

Today the History Blog reports on the discovery of a carved bone gaming
piece.

The bone disk was found at an excavation in Bedfordshire, and probably
dates from between the 11th and 13th centuries. The piece is called a
"tableman", and was used in many backgammon-like games collectively called
"tables".

The History Blog goes on to describe a nearly complete tables game board
and pieces preserved at the Museum of Gloucester. It features elaborately
carved tablemen that depict mythological creatures such as a centaur and a
manticore.

The story is at http://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/67133 .

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
