Noble Friends, Especially Vikings,

Today the BBC reports on an archaeological dig into two possible Viking
boat graves on the Scottish island of Mull. Test digs in the area during
2018 and 2019 found Viking habitation, including artefacts in what was
thought to be a trash midden.

A Viking boat burial was found on the nearby Scottish mainland at
Ardnamurchan in 2011. Other recent Viking discoveries in Scotland include a
drinking hall in the Orkney islands, and a shipyard on Skye.

That Vikings inhabited the Hebredian islands, Man, and coastal Scotland are
no surprise. Vikings settled in what is now Scotland beginning in the 9th
century. The Hebrides were Norse territory until 1266. The Orkneys and
Shetlands only passed to Scotland in 1469 after being pawned in lieu of the
60,000 guilder dowry owed to James III married Margaret of Denmark.

The illustrated story and links to stories on the earlier discoveries are

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
