Noble Friends,

Today the BBC offers a brief story on 44 Byzantine gold coins found hidden
in a 7th century wall near the Golan Heights.

The coins were probably hidden during the Muslim conquest of this area in
635. Some of the coins were minted for Emperor Phocas and are dated between
602 and 610. The majority are from the reign of his successor Heraclius,
who ruled from 610 to 641. Unusual for Byzantium, Heraclius died of natural
causes.

The story, with a photo of the coins being handled by an Israeli numismatic
expert NOT wearing gloves, is at
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-63122180 .

More about Banais is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banias .

A Wikipedia page on Heraclius is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heraclius
.

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
