Noble Friends,

Earlier this week the History Blog feature discussed the discovery of
several 7th century graves being excavated in Basel. The 15 graves were
excavated in a rescue operation due to new utility construction.

Of chief interest was the burial of an elite young woman which yielded a
lovely brooch. The piece was base metal overlaid with gold, and decorated
with gold wire, green garnets and blue glass.

A nearby child's grave contained a large silver inlay belt buckle.

Both of these treasures are found in the illustrated History Blog article
at http://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/65765 . Although the Blog photos
are slow to load, they are well worth clicking upon to see the details.

The Blog also links to an earlier post discussing beads and other grave
goods from a 6th century child's burial on the same site:
http://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/63709 .

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
