Noble Friends, Especially Fellow Archers,

Today the History Blog is reporting the discovery of a 1,700-year-old arrow
in a melting ice patch in Norway. The arrow is complete with the fletches
and sinew point binding intact. It is so pristine that the researchers have
declined to take samples for radiocarbon dating. It has been dated by
comparing its style and workmanship to similar arrows found in bogs, which
narrowed the date range to 300-600 CE.

The site in the Jotunheimen Mountains is on a glacier that is in a
global-warming retreat. The ice patch has coughed up literally thousands of
artefacts, including a total of 68 arrows or arrow parts over the last 15
years. The finds date from the stone age to the middle ages.

The story is at http://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/64078 .

An earlier story on the glacier site with photos of a Viking-era arrow and
a separate point is at
