Noble Friends,

On this date in 1982 an 8th century Anglo-Saxon helmet was discovered in
York during construction of the Jorvik Viking Centre.

The helmet, in remarkable condition, is sparsely decorated. It is a
fighting helmet rather than one intended for display and status. The design
is of the crested type common to five other known Anglo-Saxon helmets from
England, including the justifiably famous example from Sutton Hoo. The
Coppergate Helmet is the best preserved of the lot.

The Coppergate Helmet (aka the York Helmet) is displayed at the Yorkshire
Museum in York.

More details about the helmet are at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coppergate_Helmet .

The Yorkshire Museum has an online page about the Coppergate Helmet at
https://www.yorkshiremuseum.org.uk/collections/collections-highlights/the-york-helmet/
.

The Coppergate Helmet can be seen briefly in this very interesting video on
one of the Yorkshire Museums exhibitions (with lots of other cool period
stuff!):

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
