Noble Friends,

We usually associate dugout canoes with native peoples, but similar boats
were once common in medieval Ireland. How common? Well, over 500 are known
to archaeologists.

BBC reported today that two more log boats have emerged from the River
Foyle's banks in County Donegal after they were exposed by recent high
water. This brings the total from this area to 15, which has been dubbed a
"dugout boat hotspot".

The illustrated story is at
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ireland-60866202 .

Ancient Origins has a brief article on a dugout boat recently found in the
River Boyne:

A general article on dugout boats and canoes is at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dugout_canoe . The article mentions that such
boats were still being built for regular service recently in Estonia.

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
