Noble Friends,

The British High Speed Rail project has yielded a lot of cool archaeology
as it plows its way across that nation. Recently in Wendover,
Buckinghamshire, construction crews hit a 5th to 6th century cemetery (a
period described in the text as "sub-Roman", meaning after the 410 CE
withdrawal of Roman armies from Britain and to include the Anglo-Saxon
invasion).

Archaeologists have uncovered 138 graves, with 141 burials and five
cremations. Many of the graves are furnished with grave goods: beakers,
beads, rings, brooches, buckles, knives and parts of weapons. The objects
open an important window into early post-Roman British history.

An illustrated BBC report on the finds is at

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
