Noble Friends,

The BBC is offering a brief story about the Book of Deer. This has nothing
to do with hunting. It is a 1,100-year-old manuscript created by Pictish
monks at a lost monastery near Aberdeen, Scotland. It is thought to be the
earliest surviving manuscript from Scotland, and is believed to have been
written in the 10th century.

The Book of Deer has been owned by the Cambridge University Library since
1715, and is on loan to Aberdeen until October:

More about the Book of Deer can be found at http://bookofdeer.co.uk , and
on Wikipedia at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Deer .

The original Pictish monastic settlement at Old Deer has possibly been
located by archaeologists. For more on the search for the original abbey,
see https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-42569851
.

The original monastery was succeeded by a Cistercian house founded in 1219
known as Deer Abbey. Whether or not there is any direct connection between
the two monasteries is unclear. Wikipedia offers a brief page on the abbey:

Yours Aye,
