Noble Friends, Especially Fellow Scots,

Yesterday the BBC offered a brief story on pending restoration at Provand's
Lordship in Glasgow. This building is the oldest residence in Glasgow,
having been built in 1471 as a support building to St. Kentigern's
Cathedral (aka St. Mungo's) which is across the street.

The ailing building will get a new roof, new windows and doors, and "lime
harling", an exterior plaster. Provand's is currently bare random cut
stone, but harling was/is common on Scottish buildings and may have been
used here in the past. The project will cost £1 million, and the museum
will be closed for about one year.

Provand's Lordship is a free museum run by the City of Glasgow. The lower
floors are furnished with 17th and 18th century furniture and artifacts.
Some of the upper rooms are furnished in late medieval style. The mix
traces various periods of the building's use (it was a candy store in the
late 19th century!).

The oldest building in Glasgow is the cathedral itself, one of just two
intact medieval cathedrals to survive the Scottish Reformation (the Scots
were pretty severe when they rejected the Catholic Church). The Cathedral
and Provand's Lordship make a great pair for any medieval enthusiast to
visit. Lady Sarah Sinclair and I visited both in 2017, and highly recommend
these two buildings to other travelers.
