Noble Friends, Especially Fellow Scots,

Today buried deep in the local news of Cumbria, is a BBC story announcing
the sale of a letter written by/for Mary, Queen of Scots.

The letter in French was actually dictated to a secretary, with six
additional lines penned by Mary Herself, plus her signature. It is
addressed to the French ambassador in England, Monsieur de la Forest, to
allow one of her supporters, George Douglas, safe passage to France. The
letter was penned 26 June 1568 in Carlisle where Mary was being held in
protective custody after her escape from Scotland. The actual imprisonment
by her cousin Queen Elizabeth I was still a few months away.

The letter will go up for online auction on 2 February. It is expected to
fetch £18,000. The full story is at

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
