Noble friends,

An unusual gold medieval brooch found near Manningford, Wiltshire, by a
metal detectorist has been declared treasure.

The piece is inscribed with the Latin "Ave Maria" prayer. It also bears the
initials A-G-L-A, which are the first letters of " Atha Gebir Leilam
Adoni", a Hebrew prayer meaning " Thou Art Mighty Forever, O Lord". Despite
being Hebrew, it was a common prayer of protection spoken by Christians in
medieval times.

The brooch will now be valued, and museums will have a chance to buy it at
the valuation price.

The story, with photos, is at http://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/63394 .

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
