Noble Friends, especially fellow Scots,

On this date in 1560, the Scottish Parliament adopted a law, The Confession
of Faith Ratification Act, which established protestantism in Scotland.
This was followed on 24 August by The Papal Jurisdiction Act, which
repudiated Papal authority in Scotland. Although the Catholic monarch,
Mary, Queen of Scots, refused to recognize these acts during her reign,
they were made official in 1567 during the regency in the name of her son
James VI.

Scotland had been moving toward protestantism for several years, partly as
a political reaction to increasing French influence. Upon John Knox's 1555
return to Scotland, he took up severe preaching and agitating against the
Catholic Church. His riotous followers "cleansed" churches of Catholic
altars and symbols (sadly destroying royal tombs as well), and closing
monastic houses. Knox's brand of Calvinism swept the country, leading to
the 1560 Parliament, which was specifically forbidden to discuss religion,
but did so in defiance of royal orders. Among following acts, celebrating
the Catholic mass was criminalized, pilgrimage and adoration of saints were
banned, and Latin was forbidden in services.

For better, or for worse, Scotland became fully protestant during the
regency of James VI, who was specifically raised and educated as a
Protestant.
