Noble Friends,

Today the History Blog reports on the discovery of a 13th century cog, a
type of merchant ship used extensively by the Hanseatic League in the
Baltic trade. The ship was discovered sunk at the mouth of the extinct Härjapea
River in Tallinn, Estonia, during road construction.

The flat-bottomed merchant ship was 79 feet long, making it among the
larger-sized cogs. It was clinker-built with oak planks, the seams sealed
by animal hair and tar (ie. "oakum", still used on historic sailing
vessels, though hemp is the binder).

Work on the road has been suspended while the ship is recovered for
conservation, study, and hopefully eventual display in a museum.

The full story is at http://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/63895 .

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
