Noble Friends,

Today the History Blog reports on the three-year restoration of Jan
Borman's late 15th century St. George Altarpiece. Most altarpieces are
paintings, but this 16 foot-wide monster is all carved from oak to the
highest standards.

The altarpiece features seven scenes from the martyrdom of St. George. It
was commissioned for the Chapel of Our Lady Outside the Walls of Leuvan by
the city's crossbow guild. It is the only signed piece of master sculptor
Jan Borman to survive, though other pieces are attributed to him or his
atelier.

The History Blog story is at http://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/61217 .

A brief bio of Jan Borman is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Borman .

Yours Aye,

Lord Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
