Noble Friends,

Today Ancient Origins is offering a story on the fate of Anne Boleyn's
heart. After her rather grim demise on the Tower's scaffold, her remains
were buried in the adjacent Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula. According to
legend her heart was secretly removed and was interred at Erwarton in
Suffolk, a place where she had spent many happy times in her youth. Indeed,
in 1836 a heart-shaped casket was found during repairs to St Mary's Church,
Erwarton. Scattering hearts around was something of a national sport in
medieval and Tudor times. There is no proof this was Anne's heart, but it
is a convenient fit to the legend. And what tragic British legend is
complete without a ghost? Anne is said to haunt St Mary's Church on the
anniversary of her death. Apparently she takes a vacation from floating
around the Tower, where Anne is thought to be one of the numerous resident
spirits.
