Noble Friends,

Yesterday the History Blog reported on the auction sale of a 13th c.
Cimabue painting, "Christ Mocked", for a cool $26.6 million to an anonymous
buyer. There are only 11 Cimabue paintings known to exist.

The painting was found on the wall above a hotplate in an elderly woman's
home that was being cleared. The painting almost went out with the garbage,
but one worker though it might be worth it might be worth something. How
right he was: http://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/56863 .

Cimabue (1240-1302) was an Italian painter who worked in Rome, Pisa and
Assisi. He was likely trained in the Byzantine style popular at that time,
but tended toward more realism and better shading:

shown with this Wikipedia article.

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
