Noble Friends,

On this date in 1461, Anthony Babington was born. Babington was one of the
principal instigators of the 1586 plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth of
England and replace her with Mary, Queen of Scots. Fortunately for
Elizabeth, her spymaster Francis Walsingham was able to discover the plot
in its early stages, and infiltrated the group with an informer. All of
Mary's secret coded correspondence was intercepted and read, the code being
supplied by Walsingham. Her letter to Babington agreeing to the plot, was
the key evidence in Mary's trial and execution.

Babington and other other plotters were arrested in throughout August 1586.
Babington was given the usual unpleasant end for traitors on 20 September
1586.
