Noble friends,

On this date in 1595, the English Admiral John Hawkins died during an
ill-fated privateer voyage against Spanish colonies in the Caribbean. He
was buried at sea off Puerto Rico.

Hawkins was one of Elizabeth's favorite privateer captains, who grew rich
and powerful trading slaves to the Spanish, and raiding Portuguese and
Spanish shipping. He was one of the English admirals at sea who repelled
the Spanish Armada in 1588.

Besides command at sea, Hawkins was appointed Treasurer of the Royal Navy
in 1578. He successfully instituted many reforms which made the service
more efficient. Among his accomplishments was the widespread introduction
of the "race galleons", ships that were faster and more maneuverable. Their
superior sailing characteristics were partly responsible for the
destruction of the Spanish Armada (not forgetting Spanish incompetence,
better guns, and God's "Great Wind"): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Razee .

Hawkins was also the uncle of Francis Drake, whom he mentored.

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
