Noble Friends,

In the past few days the BBC has offered two illustrated articles on recent
Anglo-Saxon treasure finds.

A lovely 6-7th century gold pendant with a cross motif found in Norfolk in
2017 has been declared treasure:
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-norfolk-47435954 . In the article the
item is compared to another piece of jewelry found earlier in the same
area, the 7th century Winfarthing pendant, which is also pictured in the
article. The Winfarthing pendant and other items found in the same dig can
be viewed at https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/659168 .

Over in Shropshire, a fragment of a Saxon brooch has been declared
treasure. The brooch is somewhat worn from use, and has been described as
"well loved" The item to date from the 8-10th century and might actually be
from a Welsh workshop:
https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-shropshire-47557140 . The Portable
Antiquities Scheme has an analysis of a similar brooch fragment at
https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/862023 (it is item #3).

Yours Aye,

Mungo Napier, Laird of Mallard Lodge 🦆
